Mainstreet Moms Organize or Bust is a non-partisan 501c(3) committed to securing a more viable future for our children through the education, engagement, bite-sized actions, and leadership of moms & honorary moms everywhere.

Moms work on the future because our kids will be there.  Times like these call for more of us to be participating & leading, but traditional volunteerism doesn’t always fit into the nooks and crannies of our busy days.  That’s why MMOB works to serve it up.  We know how to pull a good time out of chaos, we aim for impact, and we are strictly guilt-free.

Below is a sampler of what the MMOB in Point Reyes, CA has been working on over the years.  We’ve had help from ad-hoc MMOB groups around the country who pitch in on our biggest actions.

Election Integrity

Help America Vote….On Paper   Our campaign to help concerned voters push at the county level nationwide against the use of costly and failing touchscreen DREs, or Direct Record Electronic voting machines.  After litigation and tons of grassroots letter-writing, California’s Secretary of State decertified the worst machines and now requires a paper trail for all DREs.

GOTVGet Out the Vote Campaigns  Our 2004, 2006, 2008 & 2012 efforts, based on our peer-to-peer letter-writing tool that has been shown (through evaluation by Yale Professor Alan Gerber) to increase voter turnout. In 2004, mmoblets across the country wrote over 500,000 personal letters with voter registration forms and absentee voting information to unregistered women voters.  In 2006 we wrote to women in Missouri, in 2008 to Colorado and Missouri, and in 2012 we sent 10,000  letters to women in Virginia.

Poll Workers for Democracy  Our citizen action project initiated by MMOB and launched in coalition with VoteTrustUSA and CREDO.  5,000 participants around the country worked the polls, documenting hundreds of incident reports and pledging to work again in future elections.

Protecting Our Children

Leave My Child Alone  Our coalition campaign against No Child Left Behind’s military recruitment requirement, with an emphasis on family privacy.  Working with a network of 400 women legislators, we saw school policy change in at least 100 school districts.

“Step it Up, Marin”  Part of 350.org’s first national effort to address global warming.  Working with our friends at CREDO, our signs were seen and voices heard from San Francisco to Marin County.  We continue to partner with CREDO and 350.org, as well as other environmental groups.

Soup & Solutions  Our signature evenings focusing on environmental issues.  These free events offer soup, bread & education, with films, speakers, and conversation.  Starting with “Who Killed the Electric Car” in 2008, our countless pots of soup continue to help us engage our local community and enliven civic action on issues that impact our environment.

Marin Clean Energy  Our support for the first CCA (Community Choice Aggregation) in California.  After a long, hard push, Marin Clean Energy was launched (with great fanfare!) and now procures over 50% renewable sources of electricity and partners with PG&E to deliver electricity. Our Moms are vocal fans of the Deep Green,  a 100% renewable option for just a penny per kilowatt hour.  On April 5th, 2012, Mainstreet Moms received the Charles F. McGlashan Advocacy Award:  “In recognition and appreciation of your passion, dedicated service, and commitment to advocating for Marin Clean Energy”.

CA Proposition 16  Our tireless outreach, along with other statewide groups, helped educate voters about this nefarious attempt to stop CCA’s (Community Choice Aggregation) in California.  In this David & Goliath battle, we were underfunded but energized to defeat this proposition….which went down in flames!  Now local communities can decide for themselves how clean their energy will be.

Rethinking Plastics  Moms hand-painted cloth produce bags to sell at local farmers’ markets and craft fairs, educating the public about the environmental hazard of plastic bags and how easy it is to BYO cloth bags when you shop.

Keystone Pipeline & Hydraulic Fracturing  Passions are high on these battles with Big Oil.  Protesting in rallies in Marin, San Francisco and Washington, DC, Moms marched with big round MMOB signs, handing out our mini-flyers filled with suggested actions to take to stop the KXL and Fracking!

MMOBAction: What to Know and DO about FRACKING in California!

Watch (and send to your friends) this video of the Mainstreet Moms discussing fracking: What it is, what it means for California, and why it is a really bad idea!

What is Fracking?

Fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, is a drilling process injecting vast quantities of water and chemicals deep into the earth in order to extract oil and gas.

  • Chemicals used contain known carcinogens.
  • Fracking is currently active and under-regulated in CA.
  • Fracking threatens our dwindling water supply with contamination and over-consumption.
  • Disposal of fracking waste water into injection wells triggers earthquakes.
  • It increases carbon emissions, accelerating climate change.

Contact Governor Brown’s office and your California State Assembly member and State Senator, and say:

“We need a moratorium on fracking and similar well stimulation treatments until there are strict regulations based on science, not energy industry recommendation.”

Email the Governor: http://gov.ca.gov/m_contact.php
Call the Governor: (916) 445-2841 You can call him more than once …..and tell your friends!

We have developed an easy-to-present 15 minute talk on Fracking, with accompanying visuals and hand-outs. We’d love to present this to any size group – workplace, neighborhood, community groups, book groups, wine clubs! We’ll travel to you (in the San Francisco Bay area). Or you can use our talk and present it yourself. Here is the talk and the accompanying handout and maps.

We’d love to hear how your presentation went and get your feedback on our materials.
